How to Buy a Boxer Puppy: A Reputable Breeder Checklist

Bringing home a boxer puppy is a 10+ year commitment. Where you get your puppy matters just as much as the puppy you choose. Here's how to do it right.

Why the Breeder Matters More Than the Price

A well-bred boxer puppy from a responsible breeder will cost more upfront — typically $1,500–$3,500 — but it dramatically lowers your risk of heart-breaking (and wallet-breaking) health problems down the road. Cheap puppies from puppy mills or backyard breeders often come with parasites, undiagnosed genetic conditions, and poor early socialization that takes years to undo.

Signs of a Reputable Boxer Breeder

  • Health tests their parent dogs — minimum: cardiac (Holter for boxer cardiomyopathy), hips, thyroid, and DM/ARVC genetic panels.
  • Limits the number of litters per year and per dam (no more than once per heat cycle, with breaks).
  • Welcomes you to visit their home or facility, or shares live video tours.
  • Asks YOU questions — about your home, lifestyle, kids, and other pets.
  • Provides a written health guarantee and clear return policy.
  • Sends puppies home at 8 weeks minimum, with first vaccines, deworming, and a vet check.

Red Flags to Walk Away From

  • Breeder won't let you see the parents or where puppies are raised.
  • Multiple litters available year-round, often of different breeds.
  • Pressure to pay deposits via wire transfer, gift cards, or crypto.
  • Puppies offered for shipping sight-unseen with no video calls.
  • No paperwork, no vet records, no contract.
  • Prices that seem too good to be true — they almost always are.

Questions to Ask Every Boxer Breeder

  1. Can I see the parents' health clearances?
  2. How many litters do you produce per year?
  3. What socialization do puppies get before going home?
  4. What food are the puppies on, and what do you recommend after?
  5. What does your health guarantee cover, and for how long?
  6. Can you connect me with families who've gotten puppies from past litters?
  7. What happens if I can no longer keep the dog?

Choosing the Right Puppy from a Litter

Don't pick a puppy based purely on color or markings. A good breeder spends weeks observing the litter and can match you with a puppy whose temperament fits your home — calmer for first-time owners, more confident for active families, more independent for experienced handlers. Trust their guidance.

What to Expect When You Bring Your Puppy Home

Reputable breeders send your puppy home with a "go-home" packet: vet records, vaccination history, microchip info, a sample of their current food, a familiar-smelling blanket or toy, and the breeder's contact information for life. If anything is missing — ask.
