Boxer Puppy Care: Your First 30 Days at Home
The first month with a new boxer puppy sets the tone for the rest of their life. Here's a realistic, week-by-week guide to feeding, sleep, vet care, and starting your bond on the right paw.
Before Your Puppy Arrives
Puppy-proof your home the same way you'd baby-proof. Boxers are curious, mouthy, and athletic — even at 8 weeks. Get these essentials ready:
- A correctly sized crate (just big enough to stand, turn, lie down).
- Stainless steel food and water bowls.
- The same puppy food the breeder is feeding (transition over 7–10 days).
- A 6-foot leash, flat collar, and ID tag.
- Enzymatic cleaner for inevitable accidents.
- Safe chew toys (Kongs, Nylabones — avoid rawhide).
Week 1: Decompression & Routine
Your puppy just left their littermates and everything they know. Expect crying, accidents, and broken sleep. Your only job this week is to be calm, consistent, and predictable.
- Feeding: 4 small meals per day at the same times.
- Potty breaks: Every 1–2 hours, and immediately after eating, drinking, playing, or napping.
- Sleep: 18–20 hours per day. Don't over-stimulate.
- Vet visit: Schedule a wellness check within 72 hours of pickup (most health guarantees require it).
Week 2: Building Confidence
Start very short, positive socialization sessions — carry your puppy to a few new environments (a friend's quiet yard, a calm street, a pet store cart). Avoid dog parks and anywhere unvaccinated dogs may have been until your vet clears it.
Week 3: Foundations of Training
Begin teaching name recognition, sit, and crate routines using high-value treats. Keep sessions to 2–3 minutes and end on a win. Boxers are smart but easily bored — short and fun beats long and frustrating every time.
Week 4: Settling In
By now, your puppy should know the routine, recognize their name, and be sleeping through most of the night. Continue building socialization, schedule the second round of vaccines, and start thinking about a puppy class for ongoing training and exposure to other dogs.
Common First-Month Mistakes
- Switching food too fast — causes diarrhea. Transition over 7–10 days.
- Too much exercise — boxer growth plates close around 18 months. No long runs or jumping.
- Skipping crate training — the crate is your puppy's safe space and your sanity-saver.
- Inconsistent rules — if "no couch" is the rule, it has to be the rule for everyone in the house.
